From Letterkenny to Monaghan

Saturday, October 5th

Headed out to Fanad Head the most northern spot of Ireland we are to see. Diane had wanted to see the northern most part, but the ferry in Port Salon was closed until next April and it would be a 2 hour and 123 km drive. Once we reached Fanad Head, looking across Lough  Swilly, Diane got her wish, she could see Malin Head.

Even though it was raining, and since we wouldn’t get another chance, we hiked about a half mile there and back in the rain to get a quick look at the Beltany Stone Ring. It was raining steadily as Phil held the umbrella as Diane took pictures. Phil had to keep cleaning the raindrops of the lens just so we could get a few pictures. It was well worth it as it was so different from what we’ve seen so far. This stone ring dates to the Bronze Age (1400-800BC). So amazing to be standing near something crated over 3000 years ago!

Heading south to Raphoe on another overcast day, as we scout for the Athlumney Castle. It seems it is part of a neighborhood of the same name. Looks more intact than many we’ve seen, but we can’t get close.

In total contrast, the Dunamaise Castle is in ruins. It covers about 2 acres with large remanents of rooms and walls. Amazing to think how large and imposing it once was. The Dunamaise Castle was founded the late 12th century on the site of a 9th century fort.

Lastly, we explored the Rathgall Hillfort which is a hilltop settlement enclosed and defended by four concentric circular ramparts.

Drove for quite awhile in rain. Had the gps on the phone set for a town we thought we stay in. We unintentionally got pretty far into Northern Ireland and then cellular on iPhone would not connect to internet, so no gps, no looking up restaurants and hotels. It was quite a mess. We hadn’t signed for international phone in Northern Ireland. So we continued driving In the rain, at night until we were out of Northern Ireland. It was a late and tired night. We stayed in Monaghan which is just outside Northern Ireland.
