Rothenburg

Sunday, October 20th

It was was about an hour’s drive from Dinkelsbuhl to Rothenburg, another walled city. Parked just outside of one of the city gates. Paid parking, of course. We did verify that we could pay our way out with cash unlike Triberg. Took a few gate pics on the way in.

This place is so crowded. First thing we did was to find somewhere for a late lunch. Had a nice lunch and shared a pint of some really good dark beer. Being Sunday most of the shops were closed but there are plenty of cafes and bakeries open. Found a hotel with a parking lot around the corner and up the street. Cost 7.50 euros to park in the lot. No street parking within the walls after 6:00 pm except for residents.

After checking in we headed off to the tourist information office but it closed at five. Decided we’d be bad and checkout out the inside of the bakeries for a change and walked out with two Schneeballens. Round chocolatey things about four inches in diameter. Can’t wait for coffee tonight. That will be supper.

Later, after the Schneeballens we availed ourselves to the hotel’s pool table for a couple of hours. We hadn’t played in quite some time, but it was fun.

Strolled around Rothenburg quite like we did Dinkelsbuhl. Another medieval town with intact walls, gates and towers as well as picturesque streets. Spent a few hours admiring and snapping photos. The hotel manager allowed us to continue parking in our hotel parking spot until 2 pm, so we made sure to make it back to the car by then.

So this first group of photos are of the walls, gates and towers. There are twenty-two towers, so we’re not going to try to keep up with their names. That means there are a lot of gates. What is neat here in Rothenburg is that the wooden ramparts are intact or reconstructed. There are some areas where you can walk up on the wall between the towers.

The next group of photos is taken outside of the wall, mostly looking into the city. Many buildings have been incorporated into the medieval wall. Our hotel being one of them. So you enter on the street, but the back of hotel is part of the wall. Some residences have one of their walls as the wall and a door going onto their house through the wall.

The last group of pictures is from inside the walls, street scenes, interesting views, etc.

Found a hotel in Ober Ramstadt (Hotel Lindenhof) as Wertheim, Miltenberg and Michelstadt (3 other towns on our list) did not pan out. Had some sausage and crackers we picked up for supper with two beers from the hotel bar which they let Diane bring back to the room. Then for dessert, coffee and pastries bought in Rothenburg.
