Lindau to Dinkelsbuhl

Friday, October 18th

Got up early to head off the crowds. Found a ninety minute free parking spot, then leisurely strolled down the streets of the island town of Lindau, Germany. We started near the harbor and it’s lighthouse and lion entrance. Then walked through the town. Returning to the car, We found another ticket. Maybe we misread the sign. Stowed the ticket in the glove box and headed to Krun where we were able to book a room for two nights to explore three nearby towns.

Avoided all “motorways” and enjoyed the view of the Bavarian Alps and countryside. Too bad the roads are constructed in such a way that prevents pulling over for photos though we did manage to find a place or two.

Once we arrived in the hotel parking lot we figured we might want to continue looking. Absolutely no luck except for one that could only offer one night’s stay. The cost? A mere two hundred and sixty euros per night. That’s 260 per person. Unfortunately, they didn’t have any trains. The give-away should have been the four euros we were charged to access the private road leading to the hotel. The name of the hotel? Couldn’t afford to ask. Tried a couple other places. All closed.

WHAT? … WHAT?…I can’t hear you. WHAT? … In a gasthaus hotel in Krun. Had to open the balcony door to cool off the room. WHAT? The noise? A train, semis and a crap load of cars. Great view of traffic. That? Just another train across the street. Why here? Everything else was booked. Cancelled the second night though. If it wasn’t for the noise we’d have no frills at all. Glad we brought the teapot. WHAT?

Saturday, October 19th

Decided we’d have another relaxed day today and sleep in. Maybe as late as 8 o’clock. Had to keep the balcony door partially open in spite of the noise to keep the room on the chilly side. Slept through any noise which had abated by morning. Maybe everyone else was sleeping in as well being it’s Saturday.

Ate breakfast and hit the road to Dinkelsbuhl, a medieval walled city. Our intent was to avoid major highways but it didn’t quite work out that way for the almost three hundred kilometer drive. Unable to find a place for lunch we parked in some little town and finished off our food supply of one apple, two rice cakes and a dark chocolate bar. We were able to find a couple of spots to pull off and snap some photos.

Got to Dinkelsbuhl’s old town around 4:3O and the streets were bustling. Struck pay dirt with the first hotel we called. Even though they only had one room available and it was a suite, it was affordable. Nicest place yet. The Deutsches Haus building dates back to the mid 1400’s. And to top it off street parking is free on the weekends …. no tickets. And were able to park directly in front of the hotel before hitting the cobble stone streets looking for dinner. Had great food and drink directly across the way.

After dinner we walked in the light drizzle admiring the offerings in the bakery windows til after dark. Returned to our hotel and later had our coffee and snack.
